Getting into the Groove…

Wow!  This being a Mummy to two children is exhausting!  How does everyone else manage it whilst looking so ‘with it’?

I’m currently a mix of emotions…I go from elation to hysteria in minutes…those pesky hormones!!! I feel like my baby is getting all grown up already!  I appreciate that to the rest of the world a 4 week old is hardly grown up…but to me, all I can think is ‘WHERE HAVE THOSE FOUR WEEKS GONE!!!!! George has seemingly grown at least a foot in that time and I’m expecting him to announce that he’s got his driving licence and a job any day now.  It’s really quite horrifying!

I have, however, inched my way back towards the computer and am now getting my head back into work mode.  Wedding enquiries for both this year and next, are coming in thick and fast (so don’t delay if you’re thinking of getting in touch!) and needless to say, I’m ridiculously excited at the prospect of so many magical days at such amazing venues.

There’s lots in the pipeline for this year which, as soon as I get into the groove of things a little more, I’ll be able to update you with … just now there are lots of ideas floating around but I’ll need a few more hours sleep to pull them all together!

I’m not back in the saddle taking pictures until March but I’ll try and keep you updated with what’s going on in the meantime (mainly attempting to change nappies and dodge baby vomit like a ninja).

Oh, and just because every post is better with a picture, here is one of my babies…because, especially in these precious winter months, they really are the absolute centre of my world.

Happy New Year!

A super quick post today as I have a newborn that needs feeding! 🙂

Beatrice Ivy joined our little family on Christmas Eve and was well behaved enough that we were allowed home on Christmas Day…she was the best present.  She’s already starred in her first photo shoot and, as you can see from the preview picture, she has no issues with being dressed up in silly hats.  What more can a photographer ask?

We’re starting 2015 with lots of cuddles, kisses and family time but I’ll be back with photo blogs in the not too distant future!

I hope you all had a fabulous Christmas and that 2015 is full of happiness for you.

What I’ve learnt this Year: 2014

  • Being a Mummy is harder than being a business woman.  When it’s work, you can walk away and re-visit it another day.  When your 2 year old is demanding that they want Weetabix instead of Porridge for breakfast (and then you put it on the table and they change their mind and go utterly ballistic!) you have to stand and deal like the parent you really want to be.  No amount of business etiquette is going to cut the mustard here.
    .
  • Patience.  See above.  I don’t have it nailed (far from it!) but I’m getting better.  Go me!
    .
  • I’ve learnt a lot about time management and getting organised!  Basically, the rule of thumb has, almost, always been that if I don’t do it immediately, it may never get done. This year I’ve set reminders and flagged emails like I’ve never done before and don’t even get me started on my list writing!  For the most part I’ve taken tremendous steps to be on-top of everything…business related at least!  That said…
    .
  • …sometimes, for whatever reason, ventures you’d hoped would work out, don’t.  To put it bluntly, those occasions really suck.  It’s in these moments that you find yourself doubting your abilities, questionning your business and wondering whether you’re cut out to do what you’re doing.  But, as the saying goes, when life gives you Lemons? Make Lemonade!  This year I’ve learnt to chalk it up to experience, plan better, widen my horizons and look for opportunities elsewhere.  Onwards and upwards!
    .
  • There are few things better than a sense of achievement.  Whether it’s because I won the cereal battle with my son at 7am or because this was the year I finally had my promo film made AND had music composed for the business (now I can share gorgeous bespoke slideshows with my clients!) that feeling of accomplishment is second to none!
    .
  • One of this years biggest revelations has been that when my husband tells me that I’m amazing/beautiful/insane/wonderful, I should just believe him.  I was wasting a lot of time and energy poo-pooing what he said and beating myself up for being a terrible person (see below).  Instead, I’ve decided the best thing to do is just take the compliment and pat myself on the back for marrying a really great guy.  🙂
    .
  • Sometimes you have to step back and look from a different angle.  It’s been a bit of a whirlwind year for the Cole family. I discovered early on that being pregnant whilst home buying, moving house and running a business wasn’t going to be easy…but when I factored in trying to be a half decent wife / mother and friend I thought I might crack. I was constantly beating myself up for not being able to be perfect at everything and it was exhausting!!  So…I took a deep breath and a couple of days off to put everything into perspective.  The reality in front of me was that my family were (and are!) my biggest supporters and knew that I’d need help this year – they never once made me feel inadequate or like a failure but instead bolstered me when I was feeling flaky and hugged me when I felt vulnerable. The friends that valued me didn’t judge me for the times when I’d been ‘too busy’ with work but embraced the times we spent together instead. Realising that my year wasn’t going as originally planned (!) my clients (and many of my fellow industry peers) sent me messages of best wishes, support and kindness and I realised that not only do I have the best clients/peers EVER but my business would still be standing a few days later if I didn’t check my emails 50 times a day/work until 2am/write another list!
    .
  • In discovering that my business survived without my intervention for a day or so I made quite a revelation…quality time with my son.  Ever since having George, I have felt that even when trying to give him all my attention I would ‘accidentally’ fall into work.  I’d be responding to messages from clients, thinking about ideas for a photo-shoot or asking him to wait a moment whilst I updated my business Facebook page.  It wasn’t good enough, not for me and definitely not for him.  With a new baby on the way, I realised I was soon going to have to split myself even further and I decided it was time to make amends.  Now I do my absolute best to focus all my attention on the feeling of that little hand in mind as we walk to the park, watch in utter adoration at his concentrated face as he does a jigsaw puzzle and say prayers of thanks as he giggles uncontrollably whilst I tickle him.  This is the note to myself that I carry with me as I become a Mummy second time around – every day is precious and whilst my business is my passion, my family are my world…and I don’t want to miss a moment of crafting salt-dough Santas with my children because I was too busy with work to be ‘in the moment’.
    .
  • 2015 is going to be AWESOME!  Every year at The Cole Portfolio Christmas Party (this is, in fact, just my man and I sharing a glass of something festive in front of the Strictly Come Dancing Finale) I think to myself ‘Wow! What a year! Look at all we achieved’ and wonder how it can be improved upon.  Well, as hard as it is to believe, with all that we have lined up for next year, I know that 2015 is going to be the best year yet!
    .

Thank you to all my wonderful clients both from this year and previous years, who have supported my business (and me!) shared the news of my work and have put my business on the map.  I’m so excited for all that next year is going to bring and I can’t wait to create more beautiful images with you in the future.
.
Now, it’s time for me to sit back, await the arrival of baby Cole No2 and enjoy the festivities so…on that note…Happy Christmas everyone!!
.
Wishing you and your families peace and happiness this Yuletide.

Here’s to 2015!

The Cole Portfolio Photography: Perfect Packaging

I receive so many lovely messages from clients who are delighted with their final images but one of the things that always makes me SUPER happy is when they tell me how much they love my packaging! It’s a funny little thing but I spend a great deal of time personalising my packaging and tying everything up beautifully so it’s SUPER lovely to know that it’s appreciated. It genuinely makes my day to see that someone has posted a picture of one of these little boxes in their Facebook feed saying how excited they were to receive it.

I spent a long time sourcing boxes and USB’s that perfectly fit my brand and I’m SO lucky to be able to call on the, incredibly talented, Clare at Tangerine Dreams Creative who beautifully (and painstakingly!) foil stamps every business card and box that I send out…along with personalising my letterheads and envelopes too. She is one super talented lady!

If you might like to receive one of these little gems in the post, with images of your loved ones inside, then I’d love to hear from you.  I’m now on maternity leave but I’ll be taking bookings for Lifestyle and Boudoir Photography from the end of January 2015 for sessions from April onwards.  If you would like to enquire regarding Wedding Photography for 2015, please feel free and I will respond as swiftly as I’m able.

Hampshire Wedding Photography Promotional Film – Abi Cole

It’s finally time to share my first ever promo film!  Eeek!

For nearly three years now I have been muttering the words ‘one day I’ll have a promo film’.  I wrote the same words in my diary (and also in my notepad – just to be thorough) alongside ‘bespoke music for the business’ (check!) ‘get a wedding published’ (check!) and ‘photograph a wedding abroad’ (any takers?!)  I would look ahead and say to myself “I must start thinking about that promo” but I never got very far in actually making it happen.  Then I got annoyed at myself.  You can’t make things happen by doing nothing!  So, on a whim, I reached out to Matt at Teardrop Films and floated my idea and when he came back to me and said he would love to be a part of the project I couldn’t believe my luck.

In late Spring this year, we got together along with a whole team of other fabulous industry professionals at Southend Barns in Chichester, to create a styled shoot…and to start making my promo-film dream a reality.  Along with a little additional footage of me with my little family…just being together and eating ice cream…we’re hopefully able to show what I love doing most and who I love doing it with.  It’s that simple. Hopefully, it gives a flavour of what I’m like as a person and will encourage even the most camera shy to get in touch…

I’d love to know what you think so please feel free to leave your comments below.  Now, without further ado…..

With huge thanks to all the fabulous suppliers and stylists who worked so hard on our styled shoot.  For pictures from the day and to see a list of all the fabulous vendors and stylists that contributed (and I’d recommend in a heartbeat!) click here

Wiltshire Wedding Photography – Trafalgar Park: Gemma & Tom’s Tennis Inspired Wedding

It was whilst at University that their shared love of tennis brought them together… Tom was Captain of the men’s team and Gemma was Captain of the women’s…it was to be a match made in heaven.

On a hazy day in September, this lovely couple tied the knot at the beautiful St Margaret’s Church in East Wellow.  Following their intimate ceremony, they enjoyed a fabulous reception with their friends and family in the grounds of the stunning Trafalgar Park, Nr Downton.  This venue really is utterly stunning, full of period features and with incredible grounds it was an absolute gift to photograph in such a beautiful place!

The gorgeous muted purple tone of the bridesmaid dresses and the beautiful floral bouquets (personalised with lockets containing photo’s of loved ones) worked perfectly alongside the styling in the marquee – I’ve never seen tennis rackets and personalised tennis balls used in such a way!  Everywhere you looked there were smiles and laughter and I could tell from the happiness on Gemma and Tom’s faces that it was everything they dreamed their day would be.

Thanks to my every growing bump (!) this was my last wedding of the year and I’m so delighted to have wrapped up my year in such a wonderful way.  Thank you, Gemma and Tom, for allowing us to document your beautiful day and thank you to your lovely families and bridal party who were all so very warm and welcoming.

Enjoy!
